Lockdown Announcement: Monday 22nd February

What Will Boris Johnson Discuss On Monday’s Announcement?

Boris Johnson will outline his lockdown “roadmap” to the UK on Monday 22nd February.

The final details of the plan were agreed at a Covid meeting today. A Downing Street press conference is expected to take place this evening where Mr Johnson will likely be joined by England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

The PM is currently examining the latest data on the effectiveness of the vaccine this weekend, alongside the most up-to-date figures on cases, deaths and people admitted to hospital.

He stressed earlier this week that changes will be made based on data rather than dates, although the Government has confirmed that schools will most likely re-open on March 8 as originally suggested.

Lockdown Plan

It is predicted that Boris Johnson’s roadmap to come out of lockdown begins with re-opening schools at the start of March. There have been predictions that secondary school students may return a week or two after primary school pupils.

It has been reported that parents of secondary school pupils will be asked to test their children twice a week with rapid lateral flow tests under Government plans. There has also been rumours that masks will become compulsory outside of classrooms in secondary schools when social distancing is not possible.

After the schools have re-opened, it is understood ministers have contemplated allowing outdoor sports such as golf and tennis to start again.

Following this, the government will begin to start reopening shops. Restaurant openings are still predicted to be in late Spring.
